Air pollution episode

A period of abnormally high concentration of air pollutants, often due to low winds and temperature inversion that can cause illness and death. In cases of accidental releases of airborne gases and particulates, special organizational measures are taken by authorities to cope with the situation to alleviate the consequences. At periods of high air pollution concentrations many cities stop traffic for certain periods until the high level reduces.
